On My Foundational Years

1863

This is the year I was born, on the 7th of March, in Denmark.

I, Johan Marines Jensen was raised of goodly parents. They were of the poorer working class. They were very honest and upright according to the tradition we were raised in the Lutheran Church.

I go as far back as I can remember. I was waiting for my father to come home with my first pair of wooden shoes.

I remember we moved from the place I was born. My father was a small contractor, a rock man, cutting rocks for paving streets and cutting small rocks for use for government roads.

I started to go to school when I was eight, in Scare, Song, where we lived at that time. I stayed in the school until I was eleven. Then I was taken out of school and was hired to herd cows in the summertime, and was put back into school in the wintertime. I kept that job for three years. I herded about fifteen cows and kept their stables clean.
